I don’t know how but September has become “Samgyup” month for me! My craving for samgyeopsal got me doing pilgrimage to the newly-opened Romantic Baboy and spontaneously making my home-made samgyeopsal.
Below is the recipe for my DIY Samgyeopsal:
- Buy Korean-style pork belly meat from a Korean grocery store. This is the three-layered meat packed in a styrofoam and wrapped in plastic. Some Korean grocery stores also offer packaged lettuce.
- Take out the meat from the packaging. As we do not have a grill, I improvised with the stove and non-stick pan.
- Turn on the stove to high heat.
- Rub a piece of pork into the pan to spread the oil from the meat.
- Add the rest of the meat.
- While the meat is cooking, rinse the lettuce thoroughly. Set aside.
- Using a pair of scissors, cut the pork into the strips. Cook until before the juice dries out.
- Get a piece of lettuce, place the pork on top.
- Using a chopstick, add Ssamjang (the Korean red sauce made of soybean) into the combo
- Wrap them all up and voila you have a samgyup!
