To the rest of the world, April may mean that Spring has come or due to the current circumstances, an extended lockdown. However, here in my tropical country, April has always been associated with summer.
Scorching sun, hot temperature, beach exodus, ice candies, and halo-halo are just some of its tell-tale signs. Children are almost always outside, maximizing the outdoors with their playmates. Playtime just seems to be unlimited.
And what would summer look like without toys? Incomplete for sure. Luckily, I stumbled upon this paper bag filled with toys while I was cleaning up my room.
Peek-a-boo!
Upon closer inspection, it seems that the contents could be from at least as far as 2004. The toys of a 12 year old me or even younger!
Assorted toys.
Inspired by vlogs I have watched in the past, I decided to do my own unboxing. Blog edition. So here are my childhood toys circa 2004:
Beauty
Boxes of accessories.
As I am a certified 90’s baby, I have my own little caboodle. There were bigger versions for sure but this size was part of the trend during my time.
It could hold earrings, bracelets, hair pins, and ponytails. And well even a Pokemon camera.
This is my ‘Little Princess’ box. Every 90’s girl would have pretended to be Princess Sarah at some point of their childhood. This fancy box completed the props.
The box contains other types of ponytails and in 90’s lingo, barette clips.
This transparent box serves a storage for my other ponytails for my long hair. Of course, you could also find the iconic pack of Sanrio and a few pinnable highlights.
Make-up should be in every girl’s kikay kit.
Technology
This is how a computer looks like from late 90’s to early 2000’s. This also doubles as a modern brick game. The keys from the miniature keyboard and buttons from the little mouse are used for navigation.
2000’s, the decade of the cellular phones. This is the toy version of the legendary Nokia 3310. This toy is battery-operated and you could hear different ring tones if you press the keys.
Pretend Toys
Thank you for the money and Goku’s power.
More money for the cash register! Years later, I have my own real US dollars. Law of attraction in the works!
Coins for sukli.
Cigarettes made of rolled paper sealed by masking tape with empty tic tac container as lighter. Yep, I know, my creativity as a child was of another level.
Stuffed Toys
Ansherina is a famous but affordable rag doll of the 90’s. She was the perfect companion for bahay-bahayan or the role as the doll of Princess Sarah.
The white dog who never got out of its plastic bag because his fur easily attracts dust.
Cards
We call these as “texts”, possibly the ancestors of Yugi-Oh cards. The images on these cards are from the anime Fushigi Yugi. One peso per pack of 4 pieces.
Other Mementos
Arima Souichiro of His and Her Circumstances, my favorite anime of all time.
My attempt in being a lady who could do cross-stitch. The thread has my favorite color.
Address book was where people used to write down contact details at that time when not everyone has a cellphone yet.
Hello. I still have my Ansherina with me but unfortunately it is not for sale. There are Ansherina dolls being sold in Shopee the last time I checked. Thanks for dropping by.
